~ Glass in the Colonies ~
Window glass was not produced in the colonies. It was shipped in from England and came in a variety of thicknesses. The thicker the glass, the more expensive it was. You could tell how well someone was doing by the thickness of their windows. Moreover, since everyone needed windows, the glass tax was quite annoying.
Note the thick extended stem, and the distorted view through the glass, on these panes.
